In many ways, September feels like the busiest time of the year: The kids go back to school, work piles up after the summer’s dog days, and Halloween, the gateway to the holiday season, is just around the corner. With school back in session it’s a good time to think about school districts. According to the National Association of Realtors, more than half of all homebuyers with children under 18 years of age rate the quality of the local school district as a major factor influencing their choice when buying a new home. Even if children are not on a buyers’ radar at the time of purchase, in the long run they are still better off in a school district that takes education seriously.
This is very good news for people purchasing a home in San Elijo Hills. Families who live in The Estates at San Elijo Hills have access to top schools, including the dynamic and innovative Double Peak, San Marcos Unified’s first K-8 school. This new school offers students an exceptional learning experience highlighting Instrumental Music, Art and Innovation including engineering, design and coding. All students will have access to each of these unique opportunities starting in kindergarten. To learn more about this innovative new curriculum click HERE.
For the high school student, San Marcos High School is a dream come true. Having recently undergone one of the largest high school modernization and reconstruction projects in the State of California, (estimated at $180 million) this renovation doubled the classroom space by 50 percent by “going vertical,” resulting in a three-story, 412,000-square-foot facility positioned around a central quad. Students, parents, educators and administrators asked that the school embrace a single, outdoor space to promote a sense of community and give a family-like feel. Organized by curriculum, with the feel of a live-work setup, students will find amenities, like the library reading center, student store, and career center, on the ground floor, while academic spaces are housed on the floors above. The San Marcos Unified School District is an innovative and collaborative community, which provides an unparalleled educational experience through engaging and supportive environments for K-12 students. And did you know that the San Marcos Unified School District guarantees admission for their students to attend California State University San Marcos?
The PACE Promise, a joint program of San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) and California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), guarantees CSUSM admission to all district students continuously enrolled in the district from 9th through 12th grade who meet entrance requirements. This program began with the SMUSD graduating classes of 2009.
The Promise provides a step-by-step plan of preparation for college. Beginning in ninth grade, San Marcos Unified students must work to fulfill program expectations. Meeting these requirements also prepares students for admission to most California public and private universities and colleges. Students who meet all academic benchmarks, as determined by CSUSM, receive a $1,000 scholarship for up to four years. A total scholarship benefit of $4,000 per student!
Purpose of the Promise:
To provide students the necessary academic tools for entering college without remediation.
To improve access, retention and college completion for underrepresented students.
To raise academic expectations and ensure that students not only qualify for college admission but thrive when they get there.
To expand comprehensive support services and to target every student in every school.
To offset tuition and mandatory fees that may be an obstacle to attending college.
